The government have been making huge changes in how we should assess pupil’s progress and attainment.

At Carrwood Primary School we have adopted these changes to make sure they work for our children.

Reporting against age related expectations will be statutory from September 2016. However, ‘Levels’ no longer exist as we are working on the New National Curriculum which does not have attainment levels. Teachers are assessing against the New National Curriculum set in age related standards.

The targets sheets tell you priority areas for development against the new HIGHER age related expectations.  The objectives are from the New National Curriculum and cannot be compared to previous years.

The new bands are :-

What Progress has your child made?

If your child is ‘Working Below’ age related expectations, your child will have achieved 65% or less of the objectives.   Previous to this your child may have been meeting or exceeding. This is because the new curriculum has much higher expectations and objectives have been moved down e.g.  all pupils expected to be using joined handwriting by the end of Year 2.

If your child is ‘Working At’ age related expectations, they have achieved 66% or more of the objectives. If your child is ‘Mastering’ they have achieved 99% of all the objectives for their age related expectations. However, this will be very difficult to achieve until the system has had a couple of years to embed. Pupils who were exceeding national expectations last year will not necessarily be mastering this year due to the higher expectations from the new curriculum NOT because their progress has lost momentum. Those ‘exceeding’ last year are most likely to be ‘Working At’ in the new system.

Developing 51%-80%

Secure 81%-99%

 

Mastering (depth of application and understanding) 100%

This is a new National Curriculum and is not specific to Carrwood Primary School.

What assessments do we make?

DfE – Statutory assessments:

· Reception

· Year 1 (and 2) – Phonics Check

· Year 2 and 6 – end of Key stage assessments

Other assessments:

· Ongoing assessments

· N-Y6, Termly data check-points, all curriculum areas

Phonics Screening Check, Year 1

· The Phonics Screening Check demonstrates how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify children who need extra phonics help.

· The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher.  Non-words (or nonsense words, or pseudo words) are a collection of letters that will follow phonics rules your child has been taught, but don’t mean anything.

· The 40 words and non-words are divided into two sections – one with simple word structures of three or four letters, and one with more complex word structures of five or six letters.

· Your child will be scored against a national standard, and the main result will be whether or not they fall below, within or above this standard

· Children who do not meet the required standard in Year 1 will be re-checked in Year 2.

We aim to give you an accurate picture of how your child compares to other pupils of the same age. We have worked relentlessly to try to achieve this for our parents and pupils at Carrwood. We can be confident that within 2 years the government will have standardised the assessments which will enable us to have more certainty in the information we provide you about your child’s learning.
